Chapter 13

ZEKE managed to recover himself sufficiently to talk to Jeb and Zack.

For a pair of taciturn cowboys, both men were happy to gossip about

their previous jobs. By the end of the evening, Ray knew more about

the surrounding spreads than he’d learned in the seven years he’d lived

and worked in the area. Zeke listened and chipped in where he could

contribute. Ray was pleased to see that Zeke dropped the cowboy drawl

when he was relaxed, and Ray could hear the teacher that Zeke really

was coming through.

By midnight, though, Ray was exhausted and struggling to stay

awake. He discovered that he had dozed for a while when he opened

his eyes to discover Zeke and Jeb were nowhere to be seen.

“Huh?” he managed.

Zack looked over. “You’re awake again.”

“Um, this is getting to be a habit. I’m sorry.” Ray yawned loudly.

“No worries. You need the sleep. The boys are talking family

’round the corner. I figured it weren’t my business, so I got some more

drinks.” He indicated the shot glasses and the bottle of Jack.

“I should have paid for this round.”

Zack waved away his objection. “Next time. Jeb ’n’ me like it

here.”

Ray yawned again. “I should be drinking coffee. Any more shots

and I’ll be asleep again.”

“That’s kinda the idea. Zeke’s determined you get a good night’s

sleep.”

Ray wasn’t sure if he liked that or not. Zeke should have been

pissed that he wasn’t going to get a night of wild monkey sex, not

trying to put his boyfriend to sleep.

Boyfriend.

Heck! That might be premature.

Zeke and Jeb came out, Zeke’s face lighting up when he saw Ray

was awake.

“Hey, sleeping beauty.”

Ray held his hands out, pleased when Zeke came willingly to his

side. “I’m sorry I flaked out again.”

“You can make it up to me tomorrow morning,” Zeke said. “Have

a couple of shots, and then I’m gonna take you back to bed. For sleep,”

he said sternly when Ray opened his mouth to protest.

Ray closed his mouth again. He was too tired to argue, and when

Zeke snuggled up into his arms, he decided it wasn’t worth the effort.

Just the feel of Zeke relaxed in his arms was enough.

As if Zeke read his mind, he tilted his head to look at Ray. “I

never thought I could have this.”

Ray pressed a kiss into his hair. “You can have as much or as

little as you want. I’m not gonna push you.” He saw Jeb looking over at

him approvingly.

“Zack said you were a good man.”

“You didn’t think so?” Ray asked, hearing a but in Jeb’s words.

“He thought you were just after an easy lay,” Zack explained,

“and he knew that was wrong for Zeke.”

“I like getting laid,” Zeke mumbled.

Ray pushed his fingers through Zeke’s hair to make him look him

in the eyes. “No, you don’t, babe. Anyone with half a brain can see

that. You’re an all and forever man.”

Zeke scowled. “I ain’t no girl.”

“Neither are me and Jeb, but once I met him there wasn’t ever

gonna be anyone else.” Zack gave his lover a sweet smile, the crinkles

around his eyes deepening. “We’re not all horndogs. Look at Luke and

Simon.
